The very first teaser for Greta Grewig’s Barbie trailer debuted online on Friday after months of suspense, and it is a technicolour visual feast.
The new trailer video, which is just over a minute long, begins with a lighthearted allusion to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
In it, Margot Robbie, who plays the historical doll, rises as tall as a skyscraper in the middle of little girls holding baby dolls on a beach setting.
A little fashion trivia: The first Barbie doll, introduced in 1959, wore the same shoulderless black and white striped bikini that Robbie does today.
A few of the other vibrant costumes on display can be seen in frantic flashes. Ken is portrayed by Ryan Gosling, who sports a fringed leather vest and fingerless leather gloves.
Maybe it’s a tribute to the Harley Davidson Ken wearing chaps. In any case, the character’s well-known washboard abs are on display in the shirtless pose.
A beat later, Insecure creator and star Issa Rae make an appearance dressed in a hot-pink jumpsuit and sash to resemble a completely contemporary “President Barbie.” Simu Lu, a Marvel star, too, transforms into a dancing Ken while sporting a Bob Fosse-inspired all-black outfit and pink socks.
Barbie’s outrageous costumes, which were designed by Jacqueline Durran, have already generated a lot of discussions.

Fans couldn’t get enough of Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie when on-set pictures of them dressed in vibrant, 80s-inspired roller skating suits surfaced earlier this year.
Other eye-catching outfits include Barbie’s glittering Western dress and Ken’s Canadian tuxedo. Are any fans of Barbiecore?
