The return of Spotify’s annual “Artists to Watch” celebrations have begun in full force, and the network’s “Most Important” playlist has provided some speculation centered on the year 2023.
Carl Chery, Creative Director and Head of Urban Music at Spotify, said that propping up creatives is one of the most deeply satisfying parts of their jobs.
2023 Spotify watchlist
This year’s endeavors in recognizing artists who should be on everybody else’s watchlist over the next 12 months were designed to bring attention to those artists.
GloRilla, whose breakthrough in 2022 featured the release of her first EP and a Grammy nomination, among other things, including interaction with Jessica McKinney for Complex’s Volume, is one of the artists that Most Important has identified as 2023 Artists to Watch.
Pressure from fans
GloRilla said that she was under increasing pressure before the release of the project, which includes the Cardi B collaboration “Tomorrow 2” on its nine-song tracklist.
“Every song I got out right now, they were going crazy for,” she said about the fans.
“So I am aware that the highest standards were set for me concerning my EP.” That was the aspect that was giving me jitters.
Ice Spice, Destroy Lonely, Finesse2tymes, Central Cee, SleazyWorld Go, Babyface Ray, Saucy Santana, 2Rare, and Real Boston Richey are some of the other musicians that were honored by Spotify on Tuesday for their work.
“We love playlisting relatively unknown artists on playlists like Most Necessary, among others, and watching them grow into acts with millions of monthly listeners on Spotify,” Chery told Complex.
“We love playlisting relatively unknown artists on playlists like Most Necessities.”
“Today’s newcomer is tomorrow’s household name.”
