Courtney Tailor is speaking out about her boyfriend Christian Obumseli’s death.

According to a statement from the Miami Dade Police Department, on April 3, Miami police responded to a domestic violence incident including a stabbing. Officers arrived around 5 p.m. and discovered Obumseli, 27, suffering from “an apparent knife wound,” according to police.

Courtney Tailor has been overcome with total anguish and despair since the events of that horrible night,” stated the statement, obtained on April 14.

“Out of respect for Mr. Obumseli’s family, Courtney is mourning his death in secret. We can’t take away his family’s suffering, but their demands for justice and an arrest are misdirected.”

“There is no doubt the two of them had a difficult relationship; furthermore, there is evidence that Courtney was a victim of physical, emotional, and mental abuse at the hands of Obumseli,” according to Prieto’s statement.

“That night was no different,” he claimed, adding that “Courtney had the right to protect herself out of fear for her life.”

Courtney Tailor, 25, cooperated with authorities, according to her lawyer, and her “deeds were plainly self-defense.”

Larry Handfield, an attorney for Obumseli’s family, claimed in a previous interview with Rolling Stone that Obumseli’s killing was “unprovoked.”

“To add insult to injury, the guy who killed [Obumseli] is walking around free and has not been arrested for causing this young man’s death,” he said in the April 14 article. “She has showed no remorse for her crimes, and it is clear to the family that Ms. Clenney… is receiving special treatment that the rest of us are not.”
